Overview of Accepted Grantees
2nd Call of GP1
STSM Grant
In the second call of Grant Period One, we received eight applications for a Short-Term Scientific Mission grant and accepted six of them. All available funds for these grants have now been distributed.
The STSM grantees and their projects are the following.
- Sedef Özcan (WG1-WG2) will visit the Université Polytechnique Hauts-de-France in Valenciennes for 2 weeks to investigate variational problems for nonlinear Schrödinger equations on metric graphs with generalized delta-type vertex conditions, with particular emphasis on the interaction between spectral properties, variational methods, and graph topology. The project contributes to the activities of WG1.
- Mariya Sadiki (WG3-WG4) will visit Trinity College Dublin for one month to investigate stochastic and multiscale dynamics arising in RIS-assisted wireless environments with mobile agents. In particular, the mission will focus on the impact of mobility-induced spatial randomness on communication and detection-related metrics in structured wireless systems. This aligns with the objectives of WG3 and WG4 to study multiscale stochastic systems and dynamics on structured spaces.
- Julius Baumhakel (WG4) will visit the Charles University in Prague for 10 days to formulate and theoretically validate a novel hypothesis test for the isotropy of normed-space valued random fields observed on random point patterns. Such a test has already been established for random fields on fixed domains and Julius Baumhakel aims to extend the framework to the technically demanding setting where the domain itself is random. This work is at the heart of WG4.
- Gloria Paoli (WG2) has visited the Czech Technical University in Prague for one week to develop a new project on sharp geometric inequalities for the Robin Laplacian with negative boundary parameter. The project promotes the exchange of methods between spectral theory, shape optimisation, and geometric analysis.
- Eviatar Procaccia (WG4) will visit the University of Augsburg for two weeks to develop a rigorous theoretical framework for Multi-particle Diffusion-Limited Aggregation (MDLA) and related models, which capture key aspects of electrochemical deposition and other technologically relevant growth processes.
- Ali Ben Amor (WG2) will visit the Sapienza University of Rome for 10 days to work on questions related to the approximation of Dirichlet forms coming from operators describing boundary value problems (BVPs) on rough domains. Within the framework of varying Lebesgue spaces, Dirichlet forms on domains with fractal boundary can be approximated by Dirichlet forms on Lipschitz domains. The goal is to better understand and quantify this convergence. The project contributes to the activities of WG2.
ITC & YRI Conference grant
In the months of April and May we received seven applications for the YRI Conference grant, of which we accepted three, and three applications for the ITC conference grant, of which we accepted two. All available funds for these grants have now been distributed.
The YRI Conference grantees are:
- Paula Garcia-Royo (WG1-WG3) received support to attend the International Conference on Mathematical Neuroscience in Montreal, Canada, and give a research talk entitled “From food chains to whole-brain dynamics: hierarchical reconfiguration of cognitive brain states”, in the framework of the Mini-Symposium “Non-normality and Trophic Coherence in Brain-Network Architecture”.
- Laura Baldelli (WG1-WG2) received support to attend the International Conference on Elliptic and Parabolic Problems in Gaeta, Italy, and give a research talk entitled “A Grushin problem in R^N with singular, convective, critical reaction”, in the framework of the Minisymposium MS-18 “Theoretical aspects in Nonlinear Phenomena”.
- Xhilda Merkaj (WG1) received support to visit the Decision Science Summit: Human–AI Collaboration for Real-World Decision-Making in Madrid, and give a research talk entitled “Evaluating the Performance of Oscillator Networks with a Comprehensive Suite of Synchronization Metrics”.
The ITC Conference grantees are:
- Mariia Serdiuk (WG3) received support to attend the MathSEE Symposium at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology in Karlsruhe, Germany, and give a research talk entitled “Radial solutions of pseudo-differential equations on the field of p-adic numbers” in the framework of the Mini-Symposium “Non-Archimedean Analysis and Applications”.
- Zakaria El Allali (WG1-WG4) received support to attend the International Conference on Approximation Theory & Special Functions in Ankara, Türkije, and give a research talk entitled “Fractional-Order Differential Approximations for the Distribution of Finite Sums of α − μ Random Variables, with Application” in the framework of the Special Session SS-4 “Advances in Special Functions-Based Approximation Theory for Mathematical Modeling in Engineering, Finance, and Applied Sciences”.
1st Call of GP1
In the first call of Grant Period One, we received nine applications in total, and accepted seven of them. Two people applied for a Young Innovator and Research conference grant, the other seven applied for a Short-Term Scientific Mission grant.
The STSM grantees and their projects are the following.
- Aasifa Rounak will visit the Centre for Applied Dynamic Research (CADR) at the University of Aberdeen for 6 weeks. The goal is to advance the area of stochastic interrogation of mechanical systems exhibiting discontinuous nonlinearities, both numerically and experimentally, with a focus on the mass-excited impact oscillator and a double pendulum system. Aasifa Rounak’s work aligns with perspectives and methodologies developed across WG1 and WG3.
- Sema Yayla will visit the TU Wien for one month to study the long-time dynamics of the nonlocal Swift-Hohenberg equations. The goal is to prove the existence of its global attractor in 3D and analyze the stability of global attractors. This aligns with the mSPACE objective to understand the long-time behavior of multiscale systems.
- Setenay Akduman will visit the FernUniversität Hagen for 3 weeks to study shape optimization problems for elasticity systems arising in roof-like geometries, with a particular focus on open-book structures. Motivated by recent results on the existence of optimal shapes in architectural elasticity problems, the project seeks to identify geometries that maximize structural stability through energy minimization. This contributes to the activities of WG1 and WG2.
- Martina Vittorietti will visit the Charles University for 7 days to study the asymptotic behavior of estimators for Poisson–Laguerre tessellations and to develop tools for statistical inference in this setting. The proposed Short-Term Scientific Mission contributes to the Action’s overarching challenge of constructing a unified mathematical framework for the analysis of multiscale, geometrically structured spaces using analytic, combinatorial, and stochastic approaches, with a strong focus on applications.
- John Fernley will visit the Aarhus University for one month to develop and prove results on the role of geometry in variants of the voter model. The goal is to clarify the underlying mechanisms of consensus and ergodicity in the presence of strong geometric heterogeneity. The study of Laplace-type behaviour and spectral properties on hyperbolic structures connects to the core mission of WG1. By interpreting hyperbolic graphs as idealized heterogeneous media where geometry induces stronginhomogeneity, the project also contributes to the probabilistic foundations emphasized in WG4.
- Catherine Drysdale will visit the Institute of Biology Paris Seine of Sorbonne University for one month. The goal is to develop a computational model of the CA2 subregion of the mouse hippocampus by integrating available experimental data with domain-specific experimental expertise. A core deliverable will be a reproducible pipeline for constructing intrinsic CA2 coordinates using Laplace–Beltrami eigenfunctions derived from an appropriate atlas. This directly addresses the Action’s aims to translate applied-science problems into spectral-geometry and gradient-flow frameworks, bridge discrete and continuous metric representations, and harness the synergy between spectral theory and optimal transport.
The YRI Conference grantee is:
- Gilad Sofer received support to visit the programme ‘Geometric spectral theory and applications’ at the Isaac Newton Institute for Mathematical Sciences in Cambridge to present a poster on the Spectral Flow and Robin domains on Metric Graphs.
